Down a dark alley

The lane didn’t look promising. It was dark and strewn with trash. The shops were all tightly shuttered and a rat briefly caught a ray of light. Nor was there any sign that indicated which doorway would be Otot-Otot.
“7A” was the address, but the stairway I went into, and which I thought was 7A, turned out not to be despite climbing two floors up and meeting half-naked men. Alas, they were just moving furniture.
I tried the next one. Yes, it would be the correct one. The sauna’s name was inscribed on the letter box.

I’ve heard about Sauna Mania from time to time from various online forums, but only now have I found it – not that I made much effort before.
Although the nearest BTS station is Chong Nonsi, it is also within walking distance from Saladaeng station. Occupying a townhouse with a street frontage that is just 6 metres wide, it’s one of the many small saunas found all over Bangkok catering mostly to residents, rather than tourists. Hanging on one hinge

A mere three days after a fire at the Santika Disco killed over 60 people – said possibly due to either a fireworks display on stage to usher in the new year, or to sparklers handed out freely to guests – another fire raged through Suapa Plaza, in Bangkok’s Chinatown. This one caught my attention because the building housed GSM Sauna on its upper floors.
As this photo from The Nation newspaper showed, guests were unable to get back to the locker room, perhaps because of heavy smoke, and so had to await rescue on the rooftop while still clad in towels. Sansuk Sauna: a pretty little place

For two days, as I rode the songtaew bus from Pattaya South Road to Jomtien via Thappraya Road, and back in the late afternoon (i.e. 4 trips), I looked hard for a sign that would indicate where Sansuk was. I knew it was in a soi off Thappraya, but I just couldn’t see any clue.
Finally, I had to ask the kind folks on Gay Ting Tong which soi it was on. “Soi 11″ came the answer, and with that bit of help, on day three, I found it.
I also found the hitherto invisible sign at the corner of Thappraya and its soi 11. It was hidden by another sign. No wonder I just couldn’t see it from a moving vehicle. Continue reading Sansuk Sauna: a pretty little place…

The nearest station to Sauna Mania is Chong Nonsi.
Alighting from the skytrain, get down to the east side of Narathiwat Road, and walk into Soi Phiphat 2 – there’s a 7-11 at the corner. Walk about 200 metres and Sauna Mania will be on your right.

To get to Sansuk Guest House or its associated Sansuk Sauna, take one of the songtaew buses that go to Jomtien from the corner of Second Road and Pattaya South Road.
Within 3 – 5 minutes of departure, the songtaew will turn left into Thappraya Road. As you can see from this map, the sois on the right are numbered, while on your left, you should look out for California Hotel.
Sansuk is inside Soi 11.
Below is a picture of the entrance of Soi 11. When it was taken, some roadworks were in progress; it may be finished by the time you get there.
Halfway down Soi 11, you will pass a rather fantastical Arabian-style building called El Medina. I have no idea what it is.

Directions to Heaven Sauna

Heaven Sauna is located on the 4th floor of Warner Building, on Mahesak Road.
To get to Mahesak Road by skytrain, the nearest station is Surasak. Walk via Surasak Road, which becomes Mahesak Road after the Silom Road junction where there’s a Holiday Inn.
Warner Building is an office building (with a few shops on the lower floors) and is relatively quiet. Look for the elevators somewhere in the middle of the building to reach the 4th floor.
Heaven Sauna is immediately visible once you reach the floor.
