adamsapple_813As reported by cnx4shan on the Gay Ting Tong forum, 7 October 2009, one of Chiang Mai’s best known bars, Adam’s Apple, has re-opened after being closed for a few years.

Through the 1990s and early 2000s, Adam’s Apple was considered the “must see” gogo bar of Chiang Mai.

There has been a major re-fit under the new owner prior to this reopening and unlike other Chang Phuak area bars which are more like host bars with boys in streetclothes, Adam’s Apple has gogo dancing. It has a show too (but so do the other bars).

It’s been quite a long, expectant wait. Rumours about plans to re-open the bar had been in circulation for at least a year prior, but the longer the wait, the more scepticism grew. When I was last in Chiang Mai, I took a look at the building and saw that although it had been ripped out, the big red apple over the building had been retained. That gave me reason to believe that the building was not meant for a different use but that indeed the bar would return. Now it has.

Overnight train to Chiang Mai

July 1, 2009 at 20:05 | In Gay Bangkok, Gay Chiang Mai, Hotels and transport, Mack's advisories, Mack's reports | 5 Comments

Like most people, I usually fly to Chiang Mai. I think there was only one time, decades ago when, young enough to backpack, I took an overnight bus.

railway_044aThen, this trip, I had this crazy idea that I would take the train from Bangkok up north. My frontal cortex dismissed it, but the idea kept coming back. Finally, I succumbed.

Having done it, I can say there is a lot to recommend it.

For 821 baht, one-way, I got a second-class lower-bunk sleeper. The train departs Bangkok 22:00 h daily, and arrives Chiang Mai 12:45 the following day. Continue reading Overnight train to Chiang Mai…

The boy who needed an invitation

March 2009:

This is new, I thought to myself. After 20 years of “research” into Thai boys in the sex trade, there are few situations I haven’t encountered before. Here, tonight was one: A boy who, lying close to me on a double bed, was touching me all over EXCEPT down there.

It’s been 10 minutes, I told myself, and he still hasn’t reached there. It’s not as if he hadn’t gotten the idea, for my hand has been on his warm rod for a while now, not that it needed my hand to get stiff. He had been stiff since when we were in the shower, where we had just looked at each other. Continue reading The boy who needed an invitation…

A brotherhood from honky tonk alley

March 2009:

A selection of tuktuk drivers, was my first impression,  but that would have been a bit unkind. More accurately, I’d say they were a bunch of straight alley boys. I guess it would appeal to some, but not me. I half wanted to leave – for the second time – but felt it might be rude. So I chose Som.

2bmassage_imp26“2 Brothers” Massage is located on Loi Kroh Soi 3A in Chiang Mai, close to the night bazaar. For that reason, it may not be wise to go in the evening. Opposite the townhouse where they’re located is a row of open-air honky tonk girlie bars, including one that calls itself “poom pui” (my poor Thai translation: Fattie). When I walked by the first night, it was obvious that the loud music would spoil the massage experience. Without even stepping into 2 Brothers, I turned around and went somewhere else. Free Guy may need to offer some freebies

March 2009:

Like Circle Pub, Free Guy’s show had no shortage of in-your-face nudity.  The crowd, however, was the smallest of the three bars. Why that is so, I don’t quite know.

freeguy_front1

Arriving at two minutes to ten, I was just the second customer in.  Porn, featuring Thai guys, was running on the TV monitor set up in front of the curtained stage, while the hosts sat around the back. With customers trickling in only after ten, it was obvious that the show would not start on time, even though the table tent said quite clearly that showtime would be from ten to midnight. Lotus Hotel, Chiang Mai, recommended

March 2009:

lotrushotel_1aThere’s another hotel with a similar name – Lotus Pang Suan Kaew – which is not gay at all, and one has to be careful when arriving in Chiang Mai to make sure the tuktuk takes you to the right one.

“Lotus Hotel,” I said, adding the name of the street, “Thanon Viang Bua.”

He assured me he knew and after a bit of bargaining, lopping 20 baht off his asking price, we were off.

It’s a small hotel with, I think, 10 – 12 rooms, with verdant trees and bushes giving shade to its front porch.

The interior was furnished in dark wood and subtly patterned wallpaper, giving the rooms a heavy feel and harking back to a period with more florid taste. Still, it had all the modern amenities that one could expect for its affordable price, including an electronic safe in the room. Continue reading Lotus Hotel, Chiang Mai, recommended…

Hetero bottom shoots to chin

March 2009:

There are those whose cocks lose their stiffness when they are penetrated, and others who remain hard. I have never figured out if this is any indication of sexual orientation.

The problem, I guess, is that with Thai boys, the gay-straight dichotomy is simply not applicable. Instead, the culture is one where most guys lie on a continuum, and even then, you can never know where they really stand in that continuum. It’s not just because working boys have their own reasons to tell the customer what they think the customer wants to hear, but many of them really aren’t able to categorise themselves either.

Nart was one of those who remained rock hard even as he was penetrated. In New My Way bar, there had been no sign whatsoever that he was anything but straight, like just about all the working boys there. Continue reading Hetero bottom shoots to chin…

Circle Pub most user-friendly

March 2009:

“Who you like?” asked Fa, one of the captains of Circle Pub.

“The guy who did the striptease with a flashlight,” I said.

“Oh, cannot off,” Fa laughed. “He the mamasan.”

I laughed even harder, for a reason that Fa would never guess. It was the second time I made that mistake. A year earlier, in this same bar, I had likewise asked for the name of the “boy” who did the striptease. It was the mamasan. The same, hunky, thirty-something mamasan.

One, two, oops

March 2009:

“One-2-come, I know,” said the tuktuk driver waiting for passengers near Chiang Mai’s Thaphae Gate. I was surprised – do all tuktuk drivers know the locations of even smallish gay places? – and not a little relieved that he did, for this massage place had an address that was difficult to decipher. The map on its website also looked too simple to be trusted.

Eight minutes later, I was there, greeted by the sight of a charming garden house, on an unnamed soi off Changklan Road.  Even more charming was the boy I spotted in the garden tidying the spirit house. This should be good, I said to myself. Continue reading One, two, oops…

March 2009:

“Tonight many customer,” said Nart, surveying the bar with nearly every sofa occupied. That’s about 20-25 customers. “Last night no good.”

“Any reason why?” I asked.

“Police come last night,” Nart said. ” They all run out back door.”

I started looking for the back door too, just in case we have a repeat visit. But hang on,  “Who’s the ‘they’?” Continue reading Police come last night…
