March 2009:

lotrushotel_1aThere’s another hotel with a similar name – Lotus Pang Suan Kaew – which is not gay at all, and one has to be careful when arriving in Chiang Mai to make sure the tuktuk takes you to the right one.

“Lotus Hotel,” I said, adding the name of the street, “Thanon Viang Bua.”

He assured me he knew and after a bit of bargaining, lopping 20 baht off his asking price, we were off.

It’s a small hotel with, I think, 10 – 12 rooms, with verdant trees and bushes giving shade to its front porch.

The interior was furnished in dark wood and subtly patterned wallpaper, giving the rooms a heavy feel and harking back to a period with more florid taste. Still, it had all the modern amenities that one could expect for its affordable price, including an electronic safe in the room. Continue reading Lotus Hotel, Chiang Mai, recommended…

Hetero bottom shoots to chin

March 2009:

There are those whose cocks lose their stiffness when they are penetrated, and others who remain hard. I have never figured out if this is any indication of sexual orientation.

The problem, I guess, is that with Thai boys, the gay-straight dichotomy is simply not applicable. Instead, the culture is one where most guys lie on a continuum, and even then, you can never know where they really stand in that continuum. It’s not just because working boys have their own reasons to tell the customer what they think the customer wants to hear, but many of them really aren’t able to categorise themselves either.

Nart was one of those who remained rock hard even as he was penetrated. In New My Way bar, there had been no sign whatsoever that he was anything but straight, like just about all the working boys there. Continue reading Hetero bottom shoots to chin…

Circle Pub most user-friendly

March 2009:

“Who you like?” asked Fa, one of the captains of Circle Pub.

“The guy who did the striptease with a flashlight,” I said.

“Oh, cannot off,” Fa laughed. “He the mamasan.”

I laughed even harder, for a reason that Fa would never guess. It was the second time I made that mistake. A year earlier, in this same bar, I had likewise asked for the name of the “boy” who did the striptease. It was the mamasan. The same, hunky, thirty-something mamasan.

March 2009:

“One-2-come, I know,” said the tuktuk driver waiting for passengers near Chiang Mai’s Thaphae Gate. I was surprised – do all tuktuk drivers know the locations of even smallish gay places? – and not a little relieved that he did, for this massage place had an address that was difficult to decipher. The map on its website also looked too simple to be trusted.

one2come_house

Eight minutes later, I was there, greeted by the sight of a charming garden house, on an unnamed soi off Changklan Road.  Even more charming was the boy I spotted in the garden tidying the spirit house. This should be good, I said to myself. Continue reading One, two, oops…

Police come last night

March 2009:

“Tonight many customer,” said Nart, surveying the bar with nearly every sofa occupied. That’s about 20-25 customers. “Last night no good.”

“Any reason why?” I asked.

“Police come last night,” Nart said. ” They all run out back door.”

I started looking for the back door too, just in case we have a repeat visit. But hang on,  “Who’s the ‘they’?” Continue reading Police come last night…

Chiang Mai update – March 2009

March 2009:

chiangmai_037mackThings change. In Chiang Mai 14 months earlier, there were “barely concealed” hard-ons in the bar shows, as I wrote in the post Chiang Mai bars update – January 2008.  What modesty there was was provided by the thinnest of sarongs or loincloths. This trip, even that pretence at modesty was done away with.

The shows have remained similar though – relatively static affairs, perhaps because the stages were too small to do more.

One thing I did notice this time, however, is that, to Chiang Mai’s credit, all the three main bars had comfortable seats and nice clean toilets.  Circle Pub, and to some extent, Free Guy, seemed to have put in real effort at dressing up their rest rooms. If you have seen the cramped, grotty, smelly toilets of, say, Hotmale or Future Boys in Bangkok, you will weep with joy in Chiang Mai. Continue reading Chiang Mai update – March 2009…

Witching hour in Chinatown

March 2009.

I first noticed him on Sunday night – a young man, maybe early twenties, about 170 cm tall, very handsome face, in a dance club full of beautiful men. This was Zirca, a club in Singapore’s Clarke Quay district by the river. Zirca is almost 100 percent gay Sunday nights.

sgp_cbd_imp_197With his shirt half-unbuttoned and a wide smile on his face, he walked towards me, as if we had met each other before. I was confused. I’ve never seen him before, have I? Was he approaching someone behind me? I looked, but the group behind me was completely engrossed in a conversation among themselves, leaning together, ears to friends’ lips, trying to hear something above the loud thumping music.

He must be walking towards me, then. Should I know him? Continue reading Witching hour in Chinatown…

March 2009:

What a difference two weeks made. This month I went into Dream Boys and Boys Bangkok twice each. I hadn’t intended to, but it was interesting nonetheless.

dreamboy_imp557aDoing my regular rounds soon after arriving in Bangkok in the early part of March, I caught the shows at Dream Boy on a Saturday night and at Boys Bangkok (its twin bar) the following Saturday.

Dream Boy was largely unchanged since  a visit in mid 2008. The show consisted of many items I had seen previous times; the bar nearly full. Continue reading Bangkok gogo bars update – March 2009(1)…

Jupiter: two bad cases recalled

I had completely forgotten about it, but a fellow member of an online forum board reminded me that I had told him of a particular experience with a boy from Jupiter Bar. We had exchanged private messages last year on this subject.

After reading my post “Jupiter tries to set minimum tip at 1,500 baht“, he wrote me a new private message containing the paragraphs in which I had described my encounter. My message was dated April 2008, and it must have related to a trip to Bangkok in March 2008. This is what I said then: Continue reading Jupiter: two bad cases recalled…

Descending into old Ambassador

March 2009:

bkk_skyline_ambasshotel1It was everything that I drearily expected. As it is, the Ambassador is a musty, tired hotel, its decor terribly dated, the spaces cold, dim and echoey. This cavernous place must have been an impressive destination once, the place to be and to be seen in, but now its faded glory is just pitiable, sustained only by package tourists.

Passing through its lobby and corridors, the only guests I see are fat Arabs and their veiled women walking a few steps behind them like so many camels, and loud Indian tourists trying to keep their families together and on time for the day’s program.
