March 2009:

“Massahd?” the girls called out as I walked by on Silom Road. I intended to ignore them, firstly because they were female voices, secondly because they were from one of the numerous foot reflexology shops which I seldom patronise.

siamsawasdeeSeated just behind them however, was someone who looked familiar.

“Hey…” I said with a smile, trying to recall where I’ve seen him before, to no success.

He smiled back, clearly recognising me too. “Last time I waiter,” he said helpfully. Yes, I remember now. He used to serve me breakfast at a hotel where I had stayed a number of times. Continue reading How much does a foot massage worker earn?…

At least that is what the grapevine says. Certainly, remodelling work on the building was in progress as of March 2009, as you can see from this photo I took.

But will it re-open as a gay venue?

But there is a flip side to a culture that breeds an aversion to face-to-face confrontation. The avoidance of conflict means that it is hard for anyone to tell off those who are anti-social. I’m referring to smoking in places that clearly affect others, sometimes even when the law says it is disallowed. Everybody around tolerates it and expects others to tolerate it too.

This becomes acute when the anti-social person is seen as someone of higher status, e.g. a customer, for then it becomes nearly unthinkable for a junior employee to enforce rules. Continue reading When smiles hide social incompetence…

From write-off to right on

February 2009.

For two to three minutes, he was massaging with just one hand, making a rotary motion around my scapula. You call that a massage?  And what was the other hand doing? Was he jerking himself off?

Then he changed hands, but still I was being massaged with one hand. What a write-off, I thought to myself.

In the end, though, he redeemed himself in the apres-massage.
