February 2009.

The lane didn’t look promising. It was dark and strewn with trash. The shops were all tightly shuttered and a rat briefly caught a ray of light. Nor was there any sign that indicated which doorway would be Otot-Otot.

otot_87“7A” was the address, but the stairway I went into, and which I thought was 7A, turned out not to be despite climbing two floors up and meeting half-naked men. Alas, they were just moving furniture.

I tried the next one. Yes, it would be the correct one. The sauna’s name was inscribed on the letter box.

The importance of goodbyes

February 2009.

Three days after enjoying the services of Basti at Paradise, I saw his photo on the wall of Jari Emas. Ah, so that’s how it works, I said to myself, and that explained why at Paradise, I had to wait about 15 minutes before Basti showed up.

fifteen_minutes_2Freelancers like him sign up as masseurs at more than one place but wait at none.  When a customer chooses him at one shop, the manager of the shop has to call him and ask if he can come over.

It also means that as soon as the massage is over, he dresses up and leaves. By the front door. And usually before the customer has left. This happened with Basti, and a few months back, with Gabriel, also at Paradise. Both times, I missed something that we take for granted in Thailand – the ceremony of goodbyes. Absence, as the saying goes, makes the heart grow fonder, and indeed I realise now how important that ceremony is.

bulldozer_631“Now no project,” he said. “Maybe next month no more job.” Ashraf was describing his fears. In the day, he works for a construction company – something to do with bulldozers, as I remember him saying – but there’s been little to do for the past month. “Today, I sleeping the whole day,” he added by way of example. Perhaps it’s due to the global economic crisis why the company is short of work. “Lucky I have part time job here.”

“Here” was Sempurna Avenue, a massage place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. “Part time” meant working seven nights a week, reporting for duty at 7 pm.

December 2008:

Like Aqua (see the post The 50-baht cut), Albury is one place that has over the years maintained service quality. A recent visit assured me of that again.

Lohm knew no more than a few words of English, but does he have a body! 73 kg of muscle in a V-shape, 176 cm tall. (Code: W3MV). At age 30, there was a hint of receding temples, which is very sexy to my eyes. The chin fuzz – not quite a goatee – and the trace of hair on his forearms and thighs, completed the masculine look. (Code: 1A3). Continue reading Albury massage: reliably consistent…

December 2008:

All the 5 or 6 others were in the red singlet of Royal House Massage, Pattaya, but not this one. He was in a black round-neck T-shirt, which meant I couldn’t get any glimpse of his body. Nevertheless, the face blew me away. It took me all of 2 seconds to say to the mamasan at the line-up, “This one.”

“Ob”, 23 years old, is from Ubon Ratchthani. He’s 160 cm, perhaps 55 kg, S2 physique, smooth hairless 0A2. His English comprised a fair range of phrases and so could handle a simple conversation, but you shouldn’t try asking his opinion of astrophysics.

We went up two flights of stairs to the floor with the rooms. “Where’s the shower?” I asked. Continue reading Black T-shirt…

Where is the gay beach in Jomtien?

For many years, every room of Le Cafe Royale had an information folder providing essential tips for first time visitors to Pattaya. One of its most useful pages was the guide to the gay beach in Jomtien. Those folders have now been packed away into history.

jomtien_156

I think they will be missed. I think Pattaya could do with more first-time visitors before it becomes a geriatric ward; to this end, we should try to make it easier for people to find their way and enjoy themselves there.

Let me do my part, picking up where Le Cafe Royale left off, with some easy directions to Jomtien’s “gay beach”. Continue reading Where is the gay beach in Jomtien?…
