Counterfeit banknotes creating alarm, reports the Bangkok Post

In a story dated December 23, 2008, The Bangkok Post brought to light the problem of counterfeit banknotes in Thailand. Most of the fake notes are of the popular 1,000-baht denomination. The story itself is not particularly informative or helpful, so I’ll just quote the first few paragraphs: Continue reading Counterfeit banknotes creating alarm, reports the Bangkok Post…

Bangkok’s My Way made history, becoming history

December 2008:

Sometimes one has to let memories be and not try to revisit places that, based on all reports, have gone past their glory days. My Way in Bangkok is one such place.

10 pm. I stood at the doorway for a while before someone came out from the back room to greet me. On my right was a Thai (or Asian tourist) customer sitting with a half-naked, lanky lad.

The captain (the guy who came out) spoke reasonable English and invited me to sit down. On one of those hard and high wooden benches, carved in traditional style, that have been there since like 20 years ago. He proudly pointed out how the place had just been remodelled. Indeed the floor tiles looked new, but that was about it. I couldn’t see anything modern about the place. Even more disappointing, the stage and grab poles (as I remember them from I don’t know when) have all gone. This means no more gogo “dancing”. This is now a host bar, I suppose.

As the captain took my drink order, two more boys emerged. One took up position behind the bar, the other, as thin and lanky as the one sitting with the customer on my right, hesitated for a while before being invited by the captain to sit with me.

For what? I don’t know. This guy didn’t speak a word of English, and I had to struggle with my little Thai to avoid complete and awkward silence. His T-shirt hung loose over what must be an emaciated frame. There was nothing in the least appealing about him. He didn’t even remove his shirt for a fondle like his mate did for the other guest.

Ten minutes later, I paid up (100 baht for a drink) , tipped the boy and left. The Thai/Asian guy on my right was still there, still fondling his skeletal companion.

Fifteen, twenty years ago, My Way was a buzz of activity. In its tiny space of 15 – 20 square metres, there were always at least 5 or 6 customers. It was one of the first gay bars in the area along with Tawan, Barbiery and Twlight. Its specialty was the energetic way the boys danced, grabbing the poles, lifting themselves up to the ceiling and bouncing off from there. That meant that the “type” My Way had were mostly the lean, athletic kind (similar to the ones you’d see today at Jupiter).

I’ve given them a fair share of my bar fines.

One memorable one was this guy, only about 160 cm tall but with taut, hard muscles, who attempted to do the same acrobatic thing while showering with me, but in the process, brought the the shower curtain and its rail down.

Another one was less memorable for anything he did in the bedroom, but more for what my travelling companion told me the morning after.

“Do you know, last night, the boy you took from My Way came back to the bar in 45 minutes?” he said to me at breakfast, with a tone of rebuke for my being wasteful with money. If I offed someone, in his view, I was expected to extract the maximum time out of him, better yet, if the boy could be made to cum twice.

Needless to say, I couldn’t possibly abide such a character, so I never travelled with him again.

Actually, I thought my friend was exaggerating, for by my estimation, it was not 45 minutes, but more like an hour. After the boy had left my hotel, I had looked at my watch wondering if there was enough time to go to another bar (there wasn’t). But the thought that really struck me was: What was this friend of mine still doing in My Way an hour after I had decided to leave with a boy? Was he extracting the maximum amount of time in a bar for the price of a drink?

Sadly, those happy (?) days are now history. At the rate it’s going, My Way is headed there too. For location, see Directions Thaniya area.

Sansuk Sauna: a pretty little place

December 2008:

sansuksauna_1For two days, as I rode the songtaew bus from Pattaya South Road to Jomtien via Thappraya Road, and back in the late afternoon (i.e. 4 trips), I looked hard for a sign that would indicate where Sansuk was. I knew it was in a soi off Thappraya, but I just couldn’t see any clue.

Finally, I had to ask the kind folks on Gay Ting Tong which soi it was on. “Soi 11″ came the answer, and with that bit of help, on day three, I found it.

I also found the hitherto invisible sign at the corner of Thappraya and its soi 11. It was hidden by another sign. No wonder I just couldn’t see it from a moving vehicle. Continue reading Sansuk Sauna: a pretty little place…

So, Cartier’s gay after all

I have mentioned Cartier Boys before, in the post Four bars in rainy Pattaya, based on a previous visit to the seaside town in September 2007.

Cartier was relatively new then, but more to the point, word had gone out that this bar put on a bold show every night. That’s virtually unknown in other Pattaya gay bars, as this town’s police, reputedly, could not be bribed to turn a blind eye.

When consumers have limited information, suppliers can get away with overcharging. Tourists typically are not well-equipped with information and are therefore at a disadvantage.

baht_5415small1From a compilation of the massage experiences I had in Thailand this year, I realise that I can discern what should be the going rate for massage venues (and I stress: venues) and what value each one offers.

I hope this is useful to somebody somewhere.

The table below lists the places I visited and rates them in terms of the facilities, the types and number of boys available, etc. It further indicates the service duration I ordered and the price. Continue reading Massage venues summary 2008…

Venturing into Sunnee

December 2008:

There are plenty of bars in the Sunnee area of Pattaya, roughly of two types: gogo bars (with walled frontage and a carefully controlled door) and open-to-the-street bars with outdoor seating.

I don’t sit about in the open bars so I have nothing to report on those.

Sunnee’s reputation may put some people off. Pattaya has too often made the news as where paedophiles like to base themselves, and not a few Sunnee bars, in the past at least, have catered to them. Over the years, however, I have noticed a general clean-up and this side of Sunnee, I believe, is mostly history. Mostly. Unfortunately, it still recurs from time to time. The 50-baht cut

December 2008:

I tipped Arthit 1,300 baht as we said our goodbyes near the reception counter. Then I turned to thank the mamasan, but from the corner of my eye I saw Arthit pass one of the 100-baht notes I had just given him to the cashier. The cashier returned 50 baht, leaving 50 in a drawer.

Who was that for? I wondered. This was the first time I noticed a masseur giving a cut to someone. The mamasan perhaps? Or was this a masseur’s customary contribution to the common tipbox to be shared by all? I shall have to enquire more about this when I have an opportunity. Continue reading The 50-baht cut…

December 2008:

I have previously written about the way Hotmale carries on Twilight Bar’s tradition of unabashed sex shows in Hotmale inherits Twilight’s sleaze.

Here’s a report from December 2008:

hotmale_1There were deceptively few boys rotating on stage when I went in at about 22:05hrs. Altogether just 12 with maybe 2 or 3 more sitting with customers, but regulars like me knew there were plenty more backstage preparing for the show.

Lights dimmed for the expectant 40 customers (which continued to increase in number through the show) at 22:25hrs. Yes, five minutes early, when other bars tend to start late while trying hard to get a crowd in. Continue reading Showtime at Hotmale…

December 2008:

In Pattaya’s massage places, the masseurs tend to hang out on the street when they’re not working. They call out to any guy who walks by: “Massage, sir?”

That’s what the big guy did, with an even bigger smile. It was hard to wave him away.

“Only 400 baht for one hour,” he said, by then joined by 3 or 4 more of his co-workers. The give-away was that I hadn’t continued walking when the big guy first approached me. “Aha, he’s interested,” they must have said to themselves. Continue reading I was such a pushover…

Le Cafe Royale, Pattaya

Over the years, I have stayed at Le Cafe Royale more often than at any other place in Pattaya. The chief draws, for me, are:

1. Its location smack in the middle of Pattayaland Boyztown;
2. The in-room safe;
3. A high standard of cleanliness.
