Counterfeit banknotes creating alarm, reports the Bangkok Post
December 31, 2008 at 02:15 | In Mack's advisories, News events | Leave a CommentIn a story dated December 23, 2008, The Bangkok Post brought to light the problem of counterfeit banknotes in Thailand. Most of the fake notes are of the popular 1,000-baht denomination. The story itself is not particularly informative or helpful, so I’ll just quote the first few paragraphs: Continue reading Counterfeit banknotes creating alarm, reports the Bangkok Post…
Sansuk Sauna: a pretty little place

December 2008:
For two days, as I rode the songtaew bus from Pattaya South Road to Jomtien via Thappraya Road, and back in the late afternoon (i.e. 4 trips), I looked hard for a sign that would indicate where Sansuk was. I knew it was in a soi off Thappraya, but I just couldn’t see any clue.
Finally, I had to ask the kind folks on Gay Ting Tong which soi it was on. “Soi 11″ came the answer, and with that bit of help, on day three, I found it.
I also found the hitherto invisible sign at the corner of Thappraya and its soi 11. It was hidden by another sign. No wonder I just couldn’t see it from a moving vehicle. Continue reading Sansuk Sauna: a pretty little place…

When consumers have limited information, suppliers can get away with overcharging. Tourists typically are not well-equipped with information and are therefore at a disadvantage.
From a compilation of the massage experiences I had in Thailand this year, I realise that I can discern what should be the going rate for massage venues (and I stress: venues) and what value each one offers.
I hope this is useful to somebody somewhere.
The table below lists the places I visited and rates them in terms of the facilities, the types and number of boys available, etc. It further indicates the service duration I ordered and the price. Continue reading Massage venues summary 2008…
The 50-baht cut

December 2008:
I tipped Arthit 1,300 baht as we said our goodbyes near the reception counter. Then I turned to thank the mamasan, but from the corner of my eye I saw Arthit pass one of the 100-baht notes I had just given him to the cashier. The cashier returned 50 baht, leaving 50 in a drawer.
Who was that for? I wondered. This was the first time I noticed a masseur giving a cut to someone. The mamasan perhaps? Or was this a masseur’s customary contribution to the common tipbox to be shared by all? I shall have to enquire more about this when I have an opportunity. Continue reading The 50-baht cut…
I was such a pushover

December 2008:
In Pattaya’s massage places, the masseurs tend to hang out on the street when they’re not working. They call out to any guy who walks by: “Massage, sir?”
That’s what the big guy did, with an even bigger smile. It was hard to wave him away.
“Only 400 baht for one hour,” he said, by then joined by 3 or 4 more of his co-workers. The give-away was that I hadn’t continued walking when the big guy first approached me. “Aha, he’s interested,” they must have said to themselves. Continue reading I was such a pushover…
Le Cafe Royale, Pattaya
December 19, 2008 at 12:27 | In Gay Pattaya, Hotels and transport, Mack's advisories | 1 CommentTags: Le Cafe Royale Pty
Over the years, I have stayed at Le Cafe Royale more often than at any other place in Pattaya. The chief draws, for me, are:
1. Its location smack in the middle of Pattayaland Boyztown;
2. The in-room safe;
3. A high standard of cleanliness.

There were deceptively few boys rotating on stage when I went in at about 22:05hrs. Altogether just 12 with maybe 2 or 3 more sitting with customers, but regulars like me knew there were plenty more backstage preparing for the show.
