Manila Cathedral

Manila Cathedral

Made a short trip to Manila in September 2007, after many years. Manila resembles Bangkok in some ways. It is large, traffic-choked and polluted. But its gay scene does not compare. Most importantly, there is no part of the gay scene that is tourist-oriented. However, many Filipinos speak some English, so it wasn’t difficult to get around.

Another quick observation is that it really has no late night entertainment, not even the heterosexual kind. Manila seems to sleep early. However, I didn’t go all over the city, so I could be mistaken.

The following posts will describe my shameless adventures in 2 massage parlours – Boys of Bora and Umah Wati – and one “macho dancer” bar, Mr Valentine. As you can see from this map, Mr Valentine is in the bayfront Ermita district while the massage places are in the suburbs in Quezon City (Kanuning and Cubao districts). Sweet Sam from the Boys of Bora

It’s quite far out from the tourist centre of Manila, but I could find it with the help of a good map and a phone call.

It’s nowhere as well appointed as the massage places of Bangkok. It’s a small 2-storey shop facing busy Kamias Road, well signaged in front. Inside, one is reminded of a simple massage joint in one of the provincial towns of Thailand, with functional, inexpensive furnishings. My main observation however was that it was way too dim and unless one’s eyes have fully adjusted from the much brighter street, the stairs could be treacherous in the dark. Girlie moans at Umah Watu

A good distance out from the tourist centre of Manila is Umah Watu. Exteriorly, the location did not look promising, along a poorly-lit main road (Auroras Boulevard) that looked rather down-market and deserted. There was a car being repaired in the sandpit just metres from the front door. In fact the whole district seemed to have many motor workshops.

Inside, it was very similar to The Boys of Bora in size and decor, or lack of it. Except for some rattan artefacts on the wall, everything else was purely functional. It was reasonably clean, but clearly could do with better maintenance to fix broken bits and pieces here and there. Continue reading Girlie moans at Umah Watu…

Mr Valentine failed to win my heart

I thought that I might visit at least 3 places with showboys in order to get a more representative idea, but after the shock of the cost in the first one, Mr Valentine would have to do.

Sharing a shopfront with a karaoke bar, Mr Valentine doesn’t exactly shout out it’s existence along Adriatico St in Ermita/Malate. But look carefully and you’ll see it.

I arrived too early the first night (9.45 pm) and found it open but utterly deserted. I was told by George the manager to come back around 11. Continue reading Mr Valentine failed to win my heart…

Not another show! at X-boys

October 2007:

After being bored by the Dream Boy’s 22:30 show which didn’t end till 23:45, I had nothing better to do than to check out X-boys. Barely 5 minutes after putting my backside down, houselights were dimmed for their midnight show (“Not another show!” I sighed to myself).

It was even worse than the Dream Boy’s tired show. It was disorganised and dragged on too long, especially for what should be a short show as midnight shows tend to be. It went on till past 00.45, close to closing time. How the boys would get customers when they don’t get much chance of being rotated on stage is a mystery to me.

Hotmale inherits Twilight’s sleaze

September 2007 (added to in July 2009):

The soi is not called Soi Twilight for nothing. The former Twilight bar, at the mouth of the soi with Surawong Road, made the lane what it is today, a unique fantasy deserving of a UNESCO world heritage listing. Twilight was raw and in-your-face. When no other bar, except perhaps the now nearly forgotten Barbiery, had full-on fuck shows, Twilight could be relied upon for a good demonstration. Even “dancing”, Twilight boys were never coy to do it stark naked; they also approached customers freely, sometimes pestering them for tips after a little grope. Four bars in rainy Pattaya

September 2007:

I rather like Pattaya in the rainy season. While it rains almost every day, it seldom lasts long. What it does is to cool the day down. The drawback is that there are pools of dirty water here and there and your legs can get splashed as a car or motorbike drives by. But it doesn’t stop me from checking out the bars…. July 2007:

No more go-go bars this week in Bangkok, or more precisely, I didn’t visit any that I had not visited the week before, so there’s nothing new to report.

I did however manage 3 massages before the vacation was over. Continue reading Three massages in a week, Bangkok…

Soi Twilight, 2007

Soi Twilight, 2007

July 2007:

Prices have gone up since my last visit, and I found myself doing less bar-hopping than I normally would. Closing at 01:00 h didn’t help either. Instead of going into 3 or 4 bars in an evening, I found myself going to just 2 for the night.

It’s hard to say whether overall, the price increases have had any effect on crowd sizes, since this is also the low season.
